Still Scratching the Surface

Host Brother Osmar Bicycle

As with last month I’m still partly in ‘adventure mode’ trying to explore the landscape and experience the culture more before getting caught up in a routine of sorts. Much of my exploring is done by bicycle accompanied by a host brother.

We don’t usually get too far since the roads are not exactly suited for cycling. But it’s definitely keeping us in shape.

When I need to get out of town, micro is the only way to go. I’ve been relatively carefree with my routes and going with flexible plans. While this has led to many hours of frustration, it has also given me a chance to explore the sites outside of Capilla Cué.

The big event of this month was the local Carnaval. Like all festivals, Carnaval brings people together and in this case by the thousands, and in the wildest of ways.

Life in site is much more tame though. I still tag along with the local kids heading to the river to cool off or, in this case, to catch dinner.

I’ve also been honing in my culinary skills, learning how to cook a couple Paraguayan dishes…

Planting season is coming soon, and so I’ve recruited several youth to help me construct a garden at the local Health Clinic.

So far they’ve donated their time to this cause. I think it’s because in exchange they get a chance to play against (aka beat ) an American at one of their local games. I’ve starting to catch on though, and now put up a formidable fight!
