Peace Corps Star Blue

Yesterday I was nominated to the Peace Corps! I’ve been recommended to the Environmental Sector and have promised my recruiter that I will better my Spanish. I’ve figured that this is a good time to start writing about the experience.

In the meantime I’ve been trying to understand what life is like as a PCV. And as I’m finding out, trying to predict my situation is pretty much impossible. It could be anything, really. From bucket baths to hot showers, to no electricity or unlimited internet. Until I figure out what country I’m going to, I’m going to hold off imagining my future life.

If you want a general feel though, I think Travis Helstrom’s class is probably the best online resource I’ve found so far. But I’ve realized that most of my understandings of PCV life have come from RPCVs. If you can find one, make them sit them down over a cup of coffee and recount their experience. Hearing their stories (and reading their blogs) is why I decided to join. The life lessons, frustrations, adventures, and random things they know about the country they were in. Talk to one of them and you’ll start to get a glimmer of understanding as to why it’s the “the hardest job you’ll ever love.”
